Fantastic Finale to Summer Dressage for the Midland & Western Region

The Midland & Western Dressage Regional Summer Final was held at Duffy’s EC, Claregalway on the 27th August. The show was a huge success with a great atmosphere and some wonderful performances by the competitors as they battled for the outstanding prizes on offer.

The Trailblazers Championship was contested by many talented junior riders and ultimately was won by youngster Lauren Fahy and her exciting new pony Ashfield Golden Sparrow with an impressive score of 69.65%. Ailidh Molloy took second place with Strong Beau and Cillian Curran was hot on her heels riding Southeast Starlight with 68.04% for third. Nessa Toher Shannon was crowned Preliminary Champion partnered by her highly talented four year old mare Furst Fendi with a great score of 71.50% in a very competitive class. In second place again was Ailidh Molloy riding Strong Beau (66.59%) and third place went to Leah Treacy on Realta Beag (66.14%).

The Novice Championship was won by Aisling Hughes and Full Set Fred on a score of 67.32% with Caoimhe Curran riding Dancing Espri in second place with 64.64%. Third place went to Sophie Browne and her charming pony Wish Upon A Star (61.25%). There were only two competitors in the Elementary Championship but nevertheless it was fiercely fought for with Finn Curran scoring 65.94% to narrowly clinch the title by less than 0.5% over Connie Noone and Kilcorban Diamond Flash.

The Medium/Advanced Championship encompassed all classes from Medium to Prix St. Georges and it was Danielle Carey riding the effervescent Early Warning who emerged Champion with a Prix St. Georges score of 68.28%. Liz White and her elegant gelding Finlandia claimed second place with 66.21% at Medium level, and Danielle and Early Warning additionally finished in third place with an Advanced score of 65.55%.

The highlight of the day was certainly the Freestyle Championship with eight combinations performing all through the levels from Preliminary to Prix St. Georges in front of judge Jacki Doherty. Liz White and Finlandia wowed the spectators and judge with their ABBA themed Medium freestyle to score 73.83%, with Sophie Browne and Wish Upon a Star placing second with their sparkling Novice Freestyle on a score of 68.05%. Sinead Donnellan impressed with her AC/DC themed Elementary freestyle to take third place on 67.69% riding her attractive gelding Eastwood Symphony.

The eventual winners of the team competition were Nessa Toher Shannon, Danielle Carey and Petra Hewer who finished on an average score of 69.45%, with second place going to Ailidh Molloy, Caitriona Curran and Evelyn Coyne on a score of 67.78%.
